MARILYN FOX
Over the course of years I was fortunate to meet influential artists. First while working as a newspaper art reviewer I met Keith Haring. I interviewed and wrote about the Guerilla Girls. Later as a gallery director i had the great pleasure of working with architect Der Scutt (among other projects he designed Trump Tower (although he gave me the low down on working with DJT. All of my experiences, including 10 years as an art reviewer and 20 years as a gallery director and 30+ years negotiating the art world as a visual artist, has shaped and understand contemporary art.
I am working with non-objective abstraction, although often a theme comes through. This has been concepts of politics (i.e. "Morning News”) and childhood memories. (i.e "Books and Candy Bars”) But color, format, and composition are always fundamentalWhen making abstract paintings, I often add what might be an awkward element. When I do, I find an unexpected element adds surprise and a much needed tension. If the painting seems complacent or formulaic I know I need to do something to lift out of that realm. There are some artists I follow and really study to figure this out. It’s the adventure that grabs me in their work. That element might be a final strong gestural stroke, an unexpected or seemingly non harmonious color or added marks. ind an unexpected element adds surprise and a much needed tension. If you are using acrylic and you find it’s not working, have no fear, just paint over it. You have nothing to loose and you might be pleasantly surprised.
